Position Details
Job Title: Firewatch Officer (Temporary / On-Call)
Pay Rate: $20.00 – $23.00 per hour
Job Type: On-Call
Schedule: 8 to 12 hour shifts, including Nights, Weekends, and Holidays
Location: Tampa Bay
Position Overview:
We are hiring dependable Firewatch Officers to protect client properties while their fire alarm or sprinkler systems are out of service. Until the system is restored, you are the building's fire detection. You'll walk an assigned route on a set schedule, log every round, and call 911 and start the evacuation if you find fire or smoke.
Firewatch is usually ordered by the local fire marshal and often starts on short notice. Assignments can last a few hours or several weeks. This is a dedicated post: Florida fire officials require firewatch personnel to have no other duties, so you'll focus only on fire safety rounds. A Class D Security License is not required.
What You'll Do:
- Walk the full assigned patrol route at the interval set by the fire marshal (commonly every 15 to 30 minutes)
- Check stairwells, mechanical and electrical rooms, storage areas, garages, and vacant spaces for fire, smoke, heat, and hazards
- Identify blocked exits, propped fire doors, and improperly stored flammables
- Keep an accurate, real-time firewatch log of every round
- Call 911, alert occupants, and begin evacuation in the event of fire or smoke
- Meet and brief the fire department on arrival
- Write incident reports and report hazards to management and the client contact
- Remain on post until relieved in person
What We're Looking For:
- Dependable and responsive when called for assignments on short notice
- Ability to work alone, overnight, without direct supervision
- Strong attention to detail and honest documentation habits
- Calm, clear communication in an emergency
- Good judgment on when to call 911 and when to escalate
- Professional appearance and courteous attitude with residents, client staff, and fire inspectors
Requirements:
- Must be 21 years of age or older and authorized to work in the United States.
- Must have a high school diploma or GED equivalent.
- Must pass a background check in compliance with federal, state, and local laws.
- Must pass a pre-employment drug screening (where permitted by law).
- Must read, write, and speak English well enough to keep a legible log and make a clear 911 call.
- Must own a smartphone for clocking in, reporting, and communication.
- Must have reliable transportation and a valid driver's license with a clean driving record.
- Must have the physical endurance to stay on foot and moving for an entire shift.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Florida Class D Security License
- Prior firewatch, security, fire service, military, or facilities experience
- Fire extinguisher training
- First Aid/CPR certification
- Experience in high-rise, multifamily, hotel, or construction sites
Physical Demands:
- Ability to walk and stand for up to 12 hours
- Ability to climb stairs every round (elevators may be out of service)
- Ability to lift or move up to 25 pounds as needed
- Ability to work in buildings without air conditioning or power, active construction sites, and outdoor areas in Florida heat and rain
- Ability to work irregular hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays, on short notice
Additional Details:
- Assignments are temporary and vary in length from a few hours to several weeks
- No guaranteed hours; assignments are offered as client needs arise
- Overtime paid at time and a half over 40 hours in a workweek
- Opportunities for consistent hours may be available based on performance and availability
Why Join Us:
- Meaningful work that directly protects people and property
- Variety of locations and assignments
- Stable company with growth opportunities
- Path to other security roles for high-performing officers
This role is best suited for individuals who are reliable, alert, and can respond to assignments on short notice.
This is a temporary position and is not eligible for full-time benefits. However, employees may receive:
- Insurance Options – Major medical, dental, and vision coverage available.
- Annual Pay Increases – Your hard work and dedication won't go unnoticed.
- Professional Development – Access to 150+ industry-specific training courses.
- 401(k) Retirement Plan – Secure your long-term financial future
