Job Description
POSITION SUMMARY
Signal Security is seeking an exceptional Security Supervisor to lead security operations within a demanding, 24-hour hospital Emergency Room environment.
This is not an entry-level security position, and it is not intended for individuals seeking a low-activity security assignment.
We are looking for a disciplined, physically capable, mentally resilient professional who can operate confidently in unpredictable, potentially dangerous, and high-stress situations.
The ideal candidate will have prior military service, law enforcement experience, or substantial experience in high-risk security operations.
Candidates must demonstrate exceptional situational awareness, sound judgment, emotional control, and the ability to establish a commanding professional presence without unnecessarily escalating confrontations.
The ability to remain calm, make sound decisions, and act decisively under pressure is nonnegotiable.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Candidates must meet the following requirements:
- Military, Law Enforcement, or Relevant Security Experience: Minimum 4 years of prior military service, law enforcement experience, or demonstrated experience in high-risk security operations is required. Previous supervisory experience is highly desirable.
- Physical Readiness: Must possess the physical ability to perform demanding security duties, including prolonged standing, extensive walking, rapid response to emergencies, and assisting with physical interventions when authorized and necessary.
- Background Requirements: Must successfully pass a comprehensive background investigation and meet all applicable state licensing and hospital security requirements. Disqualifying criminal history will be evaluated in accordance with applicable law.
- Emotional Stability: Must demonstrate exceptional composure and self-control when confronted with aggressive, hostile, intoxicated, emotionally distressed, or potentially violent individuals.
- Decision-Making Ability: Must be capable of rapidly assessing developing situations, identifying threats, and selecting appropriate responses while maintaining awareness of legal limitations and hospital policies.
- Professional Command Presence: Must project confidence, authority, and professionalism without relying on intimidation, unnecessary aggression, or excessive force.
- Communication Skills: Must communicate clearly and effectively with hospital staff, patients, visitors, law enforcement, and emergency responders.
- Dependability: Must maintain excellent attendance, punctuality, and accountability.
- Schedule Flexibility: Must be available to work rotating eight-hour shifts, including days, evenings, overnight shifts, weekends, and holidays.
- Licensing: Must possess or qualify for a Florida FDACS Class D Security Officer License and all other applicable state-required certifications.
- Certifications: Must obtain Taser and handcuff certification as required by Signal Security and the client site.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
Emergency Response and Threat Management
- Respond immediately to security incidents, disturbances, threats, and potentially violent situations within the Emergency Room.
- Identify developing threats through continuous observation and situational awareness.
- Intervene appropriately when individuals present an immediate threat to hospital staff, patients, or visitors.
- Employ effective verbal de-escalation techniques before considering physical intervention whenever circumstances safely permit.
- Maintain control of personal emotions and actions during highly confrontational situations.
- Coordinate with hospital personnel and law enforcement when incidents exceed the scope of security authority.
- Apply only authorized, lawful, necessary, and proportionate physical intervention techniques when circumstances require them.
Security Leadership and Accountability
- Provide direct supervision and operational guidance to a team of 3 to 4 assigned security officers.
- Ensure officers consistently meet Signal Security's expectations for professionalism, appearance, performance, and accountability.
- Identify deficiencies in officer performance and recommend corrective training or disciplinary action when appropriate.
- Conduct inspections and evaluate officer readiness, knowledge of post orders, and response capabilities.
- Maintain operational familiarity with all three shifts through a rotating supervisory schedule.
- Ensure accurate documentation of security incidents and timely communication with Signal Security management.
Hospital Security Operations
- Maintain a visible, proactive security presence throughout assigned areas.
- Develop professional working relationships with Emergency Room personnel and hospital leadership.
- Recognize the unique challenges associated with behavioral health patients, intoxicated individuals, emotionally distressed family members, and other high-risk situations.
- Protect patient confidentiality and maintain professionalism in sensitive healthcare environments.
- Follow hospital policies, security post orders, and applicable laws governing security operations.
PHYSICAL AND MENTAL DEMANDS
This position requires more than simply observing and reporting.
Candidates must be prepared to operate in an environment where emergencies develop rapidly and situations can become physically or emotionally demanding without warning.
Successful candidates must be able to:
- Remain alert and attentive throughout an eight-hour shift.
- Stand and walk for extended periods.
- Respond promptly to emergencies requiring immediate movement.
- Perform essential physical security functions safely, with or without reasonable accommodation.
- Maintain situational awareness in crowded, noisy, and chaotic environments.
- Remain composed when confronted with verbal abuse, threats, or aggressive behavior.
- Make critical decisions without allowing fear, frustration, or personal emotions to dictate their actions.
- Demonstrate restraint and professionalism even when others are acting irrationally or aggressively.
Physical capability, emotional control, and sound judgment are essential to success in this position.
WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR
We are particularly interested in candidates with backgrounds involving:
- U.S. military service, particularly assignments requiring leadership, operational discipline, and decision-making under pressure.
- Federal, state, or local law enforcement.
- Military police or corrections.
- Hospital security or other high-risk security assignments.
- Protective services or emergency response operations.
- Supervisory positions requiring personnel accountability and operational leadership.
Military or law enforcement experience is strongly preferred but does not automatically qualify an applicant. Every candidate must demonstrate the judgment, professionalism, and interpersonal skills necessary to work successfully in a healthcare environment.
OUR EXPECTATIONS
At Signal Security, we expect our supervisors to set the standard.
We are not looking for someone who simply wears a uniform and occupies a post.
We are looking for a leader who:
- Takes personal responsibility for the safety of others.
- Maintains a professional appearance and disciplined conduct.
- Understands the difference between confidence and arrogance.
- Can establish authority without unnecessary confrontation.
- Recognizes when immediate action is required and when restraint is the better decision.
- Holds themselves and their team accountable.
- Remains dependable and professional regardless of shift, workload, or circumstances.
- Understands that protecting people requires both physical readiness and exceptional judgment.
A strong command presence, disciplined decision-making, and the ability to remain calm under pressure are essential requirements.
